Biographical note on Dr João de Freitas da Silva, 1st Viscount of Monte Belo, a Lisbon-born physician trained at the Funchal medical school and Montpellier who headed Madeira's port health station and the Gonçalo Aires lazaretto.
He was born in Lisbon in 1842 and is the 1st Viscount of Monte Belo. He qualified as a physician and surgeon at the former medical school of Funchal, took a doctorate in medicine at the faculty of Montpellier (1863) and is chief officer of the Port Health Station (guarda-mor da Estação de Saúde). He was director of the Lazareto de Gonçalo Aires (‘Gonçalo Aires quarantine hospital’) and representative (procurador) to the District General Council (Junta Geral do Distrito).
