Frade (fish)
Original title: Frade (Peixe)
Explains that 'frade' was the old Madeiran name for the blenny now called caboz, while in mainland Portugal it names the basking shark, occasionally seen off Madeira.
The name formerly given in Madeira to Blennius palmicornis, a fish known today as the caboz. It lives along the coast and is common in rock pools.
The fish known in Portugal as the frade is Selache maxima, which appears from time to time in Madeiran waters. It is a very large shark that comes from the cold northern seas and is sometimes found already dead, floating on the surface of the ocean.
