Figueiroa (Francisco Anacleto de)

He was a colonel of the militia (milícias) and died in Funchal in 1810. We know nothing about him that would make him worthy of mention, but the horrible death he met at the bottom of a tomb deserves special record here. In an official document we came across the following information: ‘Francisco Anacleto de Figueiroa, colonel of the militia, was taken for dead in Funchal, where he lived. He was carried to the burial vault (carneiro) of João Gonçalves Zarco in the Convent of St Clare (Santa Clara). Years later, another death in the family made it necessary to open the vault, and there, beside the heavy iron grille at the entrance, at the gloomy foot of the stairway, lay the skeleton of Figueiroa, clutching the bars in a last despair of atrocious agony.’
