Faria (José Cupertino de)

Biographical note on José Cupertino de Faria, a Funchal-born former seminarian and soldier who published a book on the Madeira archipelago in Setúbal in 1901.

He was born in Funchal around 1866 and is the son of Manuel de Faria and Dona Maria Isabel Fernandes de Faria. He attended the seminary (Seminário) of this diocese, but did not complete its preparatory studies, and afterwards enlisted in the army. He left this island long ago and lived for many years in the city of Setúbal. It was there that in 1901 he published a volume of 202 pages entitled O Arquipelago da Madeira, which contains many errors and inaccuracies.
