Azeredo

Note on the Azeredo surname in Madeira, brought by a shipwrecked traveller in the 16th century, which did not survive because his son took the name Almeida.

Manuel de Faria Azeredo, who was shipwrecked on Madeira around the middle of the 16th century while bound for India, married on this island, settled here and left descendants. His surname (apelido), however, which is in fact that of a noble family of Portugal, did not spread among us, because his son Manuel de Faria took the surname Almeida, perhaps his mother’s, instead of the name Azeredo that he had inherited from his father.
