Faial (stream)
Original title: Faial (Ribeira do)
Stream rising near Pico Ruivo and reaching the sea at Faial, crossed by the longest bridge in Madeira, built 1907–1910.
It rises near Pico Ruivo (‘russet peak’) and receives as tributaries the Ribeiro Frio (‘cold brook’) and Metade streams, crossing the parish (freguesia) of Faial and reaching the sea there. Between 1907 and 1910 the longest bridge in Madeira was built over this stream; it had long been regarded as one of the most pressing needs to be met by the district’s public works. Its deck rests on several arches and it measures about 130 metres in length.
