Spanish émigrés

Original title: Emigrados Espanhóis

Account of seventy Spanish revolutionaries, officers and soldiers, who took refuge in Madeira in 1866 after a failed uprising in Spain. They left secretly after the 1868 revolution.

When the revolution that broke out in Spain in early 1866 failed, many revolutionaries took refuge in Portugal. Seventy of them came to this island – 46 officers and 24 soldiers – arriving here on 1 July of the same year. These Spanish émigrés, some of whom married on the island, left after the triumph of the revolution of 1868, which dethroned Isabella II. They went by night to Praia Formosa (‘beautiful beach’) to embark, without the authorities learning of their departure.
