Drumond

The Drumond family, one of the most distinguished noble lineages of Madeira, descended from the Scot João Escorcio Drumond, who settled in Santa Cruz around 1425. The entry also gives the family's coat of arms.

Drumond

This surname,’ says the annotator of the Saudades, ‘is one of the most distinguished in the Madeiran nobiliaries. It descends from João Escorcio Drumond, a native of the kingdom of Scotland and son of John Drummond, lord of Stobhall, brother of Annabella, wife of Robert III, king of that realm, as is shown by the authentic document preserved by his descendants, issued in Scotland in 1525, which also records that the said João Escorcio Drummond had come to this island of Madeira a hundred years earlier, from which it is evident that this was in 1425. He lived in Santa Cruz, where he married Branca Afonso, sister of the first vicar and a native of Covilhã.

Arms

A shield with a field of gold and three wavy bars gules, and for difference a green brisure bearing a D of gold; an open silver helm trimmed with gold, mantling of gold and gules, with its collar of gold.

Inocêncio Francisco da Silva states in his Diccionario Bibliografico that a memoir on the Drumond family of the island of Madeira was published in Brazil.
