Dourada (Coryphaena equisetis)
Short entry on the dourada (Coryphaena equisetis), a fish seen in Madeiran waters from June to October whose flesh is little valued. It notes Lowe's report that local names distinguish a 'female' and 'male' dourado for two Coryphaena species.
A fish of the family Scombridae, which usually appears in June and disappears after October. Its flesh is little valued. The name dourada comes from the golden colour of the species of the genus Coryphaena. According to Richard Thomas Lowe, the name dourado fêmea (‘female dourado’) is applied to Coryphaena equisetis and dourado macho (‘male dourado’) to Coryphaena hippuris.
