Note on the Couto family name in Madeira, probably descended from Joane Anes de Couto Cardoso, landholder at Paul do Mar and Jardim do Mar.
This family surname probably derives from Joane Anes de Couto Cardoso, who held sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) lands at Paul and Jardim do Mar (‘garden by the sea’), and founded the chapel of St Maurus (Santo Amaro) in the latter place.
