Coutinho (João Gonçalves da Câmara)

Original title: Coutinho (João Gonçalves da Camara)

Governor and captain-general of Madeira appointed in 1777, known for reports on the garrison, fortifications and justice and for a serious conflict with Bishop D. Gaspar Brandão.

Coutinho (João Gonçalves da Câmara)

His appointment as governor and captain-general of Madeira dates from 19 August 1777, and he took up the post on 15 September of the same year. He sent the central government several interesting reports on the indiscipline of the garrison troops, the state of the fortifications, the administration of justice and other public services. He had a serious conflict with Bishop Dom Gaspar Brandão over the imprisonment of the bachelor (bacharel, university graduate) António Xavier Pimentel, which was ended by the intervention of the government in Lisbon. Extensive correspondence was exchanged on this matter between the minister

Martinho de Melo, the governor and the prelate.

As some of his predecessors had already done, he insistently asked the home government to define with complete precision the powers and jurisdiction of the captains-general (capitão-general, military governor of Madeira), in order to avoid the conflicts that sometimes arose between certain authorities of this archipelago.
