The Cossart family of Madeira wine merchants and the succession of names of the firm Cossart, Gordon & Co., founded in 1745.

Cossart

This family surname derives from William Cossart, who as early as 1809 had some interests connected with the export trade in wines from this island, carried on by the English firm of Newton, Gordon, Murdoch & Scott.

The firm now (1920) belonging to Cossart, Gordon & C.º was founded in 1745 and has since traded under the following names: Francisco Newton (1745–1748), Newton & Spence (1748–1758), Newton & Gordon (1758–1775), Newton, Gordon & Johnston (1775–1791), Newton, Gordon & Murdoch (1791–1802), Newton, Gordon, Murdoch & C.º (1802–1805), Newton, Gordon, Murdoch & Scott (1805–1834), Newton, Gordon Murdoch & C.º (1834–1839), Newton, Gordon, Cossart & C.º (1839–1861) and Cossart, Gordon & C.º (1861).
