Correia
The Correia family of Madeira descends from João Afonso, companion of Zarco. It notes his son António Correia, a knight who fought in North Africa.
We have already devoted a short article to João Afonso, companion of Zarco, who became the founder of a noble and distinguished family on this island. He also bore the surname Correia, which he passed on to his descendants, and they were the first to use it on this island. João Afonso had a son named António Correia, who was born in Madeira in 1457 and who, several genealogists state, died in 1572, at the age of about 115. This António Correia was a valiant knight who fought bravely in Africa, chiefly at Asilah and Safi, where he maintained a large number of men and horses at his own expense. The old Madeiran chronicles speak of him in terms of high praise.
