Choupa (Cantharus griseus)
The black sea bream, an uncommon solitary fish in Madeiran coastal waters, mostly caught on hook and line.
A fish of the family Sparidae, not very common in the coastal waters of this archipelago.
It has a shellfish-like flavour and is almost always caught on hook rigs, sometimes letting itself be taken in the scoop net (peneiro) or in trawl nets, but always in small numbers, which is perhaps due to its solitary habits and its aversion to life in shoals.
