Carvalho (João da Silva)
Funchal primary teacher (1821–1903) who taught for nearly 60 years, founded a school in 1845 and served on the municipal council.
He was born in Funchal on 16 October 1821 and for nearly 60 years taught primary school in this city with great proficiency. On 2 October 1845 he founded his first school in partnership with Augusto Correia de Sampaio, also now deceased. In recognition of his services, the Municipal Council granted him, in the last years of his life, an annual pension of 240,000 réis (old Portuguese money of account; 1$000 = 1,000 réis, 1:000$000 = one conto = 1,000,000 réis). He contributed to O Estudo, A Ordem and other periodicals, was a member of the Municipal Council and of the District Commission (Comissão Distrital), and in 1867 published, with his own preface, Januário Justiniano de Nóbrega’s work on the visit of the Empress of Brazil to Madeira. He died in Funchal on 9 July 1903.
