Chantries

Original title: Capelas

Capelas were entailed estates burdened with pious obligations, inalienable, supervised by the Juízo dos Resíduos e Capelas.

They differed from entailed estates in that the property was subject to pious obligations. Chantries (capelas) could not be alienated, and their holders received only part of the income from the property, the remainder being set aside to fulfil the said obligations. There was a court called the ‘Juízo dos Resíduos e Capelas’ (see that entry), which oversaw the fulfilment of all pious obligations and imposed penalties on defaulters.
