Madeiran-born natural son of Rui Gonçalves da Câmara who followed his father to São Miguel and was famed as a horseman in Africa.
He was born in Madeira, the natural son of Luís Gonçalves da Câmara. He accompanied his father to São Miguel when the latter bought the captaincy of that island. He distinguished himself in Africa, and António Cordeiro, in the ‘Island History’ (Historia Insulana), says that he was a great horseman, citing in this connection an incident that was much talked about at the time it happened.
