Câmara (Rui Gonçalves da)
Original title: Camara (Rui Gonçalves da)
Rui Gonçalves da Câmara was a distinguished Portuguese soldier in India, captain of the fortress of Ormuz, who stood out at the taking of Cahul. He was a son of João Gonçalves da Câmara, 4th captain-donatary of Funchal.
He was one of the most distinguished of our soldiers who served in India. The chronicles that deal with our struggles in the East speak of him in the highest terms of praise. He was captain of the stronghold of Hormuz and distinguished himself remarkably at the taking of Cahul. In ‘Longing for the Homeland’ (Saudades da Terra), Gaspar Frutuoso recounts some of his most notable feats of arms.
This Rui Gonçalves da Câmara, who should not be confused with the son of João Gonçalves Zarco and captain-donatary (capitão-donatário) of the island of São Miguel, was a son of João Gonçalves da Câmara, 4th donatary of Funchal, and a brother of Father Luís Gonçalves da Câmara and of Martim Gonçalves da Câmara.
