The well-known writer and poet Bulhão Pato was a close friend of the 2nd Count of Carvalhal (‘oak grove’), and in his company spent several seasons on this island. He refers to this in some of his books with the most vivid and fond recollection. In the book Sob os Ciprestes and in the three volumes of his Memórias he writes about a number of Madeiran people and things. They contain extensive references to the Count of Carvalhal, Jacinto de Sant'Ana e Vasconcelos, the Viscountess of Nogueiras, Jaime Moniz, Luís da Costa Pereira and others. In cantos VI and VII of his poem Paquita, Bulhão Pato gives a fine poetic description of Madeira. Bulhão Pato stayed on this island from 7 August 1850 to 6 March 1851.
