Brito (family)

Original title: Brito

The Brito or Brito de Oliveira family, introduced to Madeira in the late fifteenth century, with its coat of arms.

The surname Brito, or Brito de Oliveira, was introduced to this island by Pedro de Brito de Oliveira Pestana, who settled in Madeira towards the end of the third quarter of the 15th century with his brother João Mendo or Mendes de Brito. Both founded entails (instituições vinculares). According to Henriques de Noronha, the arms of this family are: on a field gules nine lozenges in three pales, each charged with a lion purpure; and as crest, a lion of the arms with lozenges argent.
