Original title: Branco (Dr. Fidelio de Freitas)
Fidelio de Freitas Branco (1861–1918), Funchal-born lawyer and landowner, was deputy for Madeira in four legislatures and a civil governor on the mainland.
He was born in Funchal on 16 June 1861, the son of Councillor (conselheiro, honorary title of the royal council) Silvano de Freitas Branco and Dona Maria Cândida de Sant'Ana Branco. He graduated in law at the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra) in 1884 and then practised as a lawyer in Lisbon for some time, but gave up this career to devote himself to agriculture and the management of his estate. He represented Madeira in parliament in the legislatures of 1887–1889, 1890–1892, 1894–1895 and 1895–1897. He was also deputy for a constituency on the mainland, and among the public-service posts he held was that of civil governor of one of the mainland districts. He died in Sintra on 29 October 1918.
