Butterflies

Original title: Borboletas

Notes that about 120 species of Lepidoptera are known in Madeira, naming common butterflies including the cabbage white whose caterpillar damages cabbages.

Some 120 species of Lepidoptera are known in Madeira, many of which go by the name of butterflies. In gardens and fields a number of day-flying species are common, notable for the colouring of their wings, such as Pieris brassicae, Colias edusa, Lycaena baetica, Vanessa atalanta, V. callirhoe, V. cardui, etc. It is Pieris brassicae, with its almost white wings, that produces the caterpillar which destroys cabbages.
