Fire brigade
Original title: Bombeiros (Companhia de)
History of the Funchal municipal fire brigade, founded in 1888–89 and reconstituted in 1906.
The company was organised at a session of the Funchal Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal) on 24 September 1888, and its personnel were appointed on 11 April 1889. Its regulations were approved by the Council on 4 April 1889. To train Funchal’s first firemen, Luís da Terra Viana, a fireman from Porto, came to Madeira and stayed at the Hotel do Carmo (‘Carmel’) at the Council’s expense. The original company was dissolved in 1906, but by 20 September of that year a new company had already been formed, organised by Alfredo Jorge Ferraz, an employee of the postal telegraph service.
