Bettencourt (Anastacio Moniz de)

Madeiran poet and teacher of rhetoric and philosophy in Funchal in the early nineteenth century, who later lived and died on Terceira in the Azores.

A Madeiran poet who died on the island of Terceira, where he lived for many years. On 18 May 1801 he was appointed substitute teacher of the chairs of rhetoric and philosophy that then existed in Funchal, and on 30 March 1803 teacher of the chair of rational philosophy. He was a bachelor (bacharel, university graduate) in canon law from the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra), and was the father of Dr Nicolau Anastacio de Bettencourt, who also died on Terceira.
