Begonia

The genus Begonia, many species and hybrids of which grow in Funchal gardens; the name is also applied locally to Farfugium grande.

A genus of the family Begoniaceae, with a great many representatives in the gardens of Funchal. Begonia fuchsioides, B. semperflorens, B. rex and B. maculata seem to be common, as do various hybrids notable chiefly for the beauty of their foliage. Madeirans also give the name begónia to Farfugium grande, a composite with spotted, somewhat fleshy leaves.
