Araújo

The Araújo family of Madeira, with branches descending from Gonçalo Alves de Araújo, holder of land at Jardim do Mar, and from Afonso Enes de Araújo.

One branch of the family of this surname descends from Gonçalo Alves de Araújo, who came to this island at the end of the 15th century and held land by sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) in the village (lugar, settlement rank below a town) of Jardim do Mar (‘garden by the sea’), for which reason he was known as Gonçalo Alves do Jardim. Another branch comes from Afonso Enes de Araújo.
