Álvares da Silva (Lieutenant Luís)

Original title: Alvares da Silva (Tenente Luiz)

Lieutenant Luís Álvares da Silva, a Madeiran officer killed when native rebels overran the fortified post of Manufai in Timor on 24 December 1912.

This Madeiran belonged to the military garrison of our colony of Timor when, on 24 December 1912, the natives rose up against the Portuguese authorities. Overrunning the fortified post of Manufai, they murdered our fellow countryman, the commander of that post, who, abandoned by the troops under his command, could offer no serious resistance to the rebels’ attack. The gallant officer fell victim to the fulfilment of his duty and to his wish to uphold the prestige of the Portuguese name in such distant lands.
