Álvares da Silva (Aníbal)
Original title: Alvares da Silva (Anibal)
Aníbal Álvares da Silva (1819–1908), a Funchal-born lawyer who became the leading figure of Setúbal, serving as its mayor and several times as a deputy.
He was born in Funchal on 29 May 1819, the son of Vitorino Álvares da Silva.
He settled early in what was then the town (vila) of Setúbal, where his father held the post of chief customs guard (guarda-mor da Alfândega).
Having completed his law degree with remarkable distinction, he set up as a lawyer in his adopted homeland. Through his rare talent, austerity of character and other admirable qualities, he became the greatest influence in Setúbal. He was president of the Council there and was elected deputy several times. The services he rendered to that town were of the utmost importance; it regards him as a great benefactor, and there are plans to raise a monument to his memory there.
He died on 8 December 1908 in Lisbon, where he had practised law for many years with great renown.
