Achada

Explains the archaic word achada, a small flat area amid rough terrain, which survives in many Madeiran place names.

This archaic word (chada or chaada), meaning a small area of level ground or plain, usually lying amid rough terrain, gave its name by analogy to many places in this archipelago that still keep it today. The achada (small plateau) survives only in its toponymic sense (Achada de…).
