Abruzzi (Duke of the)

Italian prince who last visited Madeira in 1907 commanding the cruiser Etna and wrote about the island.
He was last in Madeira in 1907, as commander of the cruiser Etna. On Deserta Grande (‘great deserted island’) he was given a shooting party by the owners of that island, and in Funchal an official ball by the governor, Dom Bernardo da Costa. The Duke of the Abruzzi refers to Madeira several times in some of his published writings.
