D. Bernardo da Costa de Sousa Macedo was twice appointed civil governor of the district of Madeira, first in 1901 and again in 1906.

He was appointed Civil Governor of Madeira by decree of 21 February 1901 and took office on 9 May of the same year.

By decree of 6 June 1906 he was appointed Civil Governor of the district for the second time, and he took up the post on the 23rd of the same month.
