The Levada dos Piornais is an old private levada headed in the Socorridos, and one of the two most important private levadas on Madeira. It irrigates São Martinho and São Pedro over more than ten kilometres, supplying mills and public wash-houses through four branches of about 30 litres per second each. It also supplied water to the Bianchi and Vigia quintas.
