Governor and captain-general of Madeira from 1754 to 1757, later Count of Ega and viceroy of India. His 1754 report exposed the militias' poor discipline, and in 1756 he received the royal order for a harbour of refuge at Funchal; he was imprisoned for alleged abuses and rehabilitated posthumously.
