Lourenço José Moniz

Madeiran physician, first rector of the Funchal lyceum (from 1838) and deputy for Madeira repeatedly between 1826 and 1853, a Cartist and later Cabralist. He is remembered for his integrity and selfless defence of the archipelago's interests, and died in Lisbon in 1857.
