Main article Veitch (Henrique) Henrique (Henry) Veitch was a British subject who served for many years as English consul in Madeira and died there in 1857. He is remembered for meeting Napoleon aboard the Northumberland in 1815, for his distinctive buildings, and for protecting Madeirans during the Miguelist occupation and the civil wars.

Henrique (Henry) Veitch was English consul in Madeira from 1813 for many years, and died there in 1857. He met Napoleon aboard the Northumberland in 1815 and protected Madeiran liberals during the Miguelist occupation and the civil wars. He also built a country house at Jardim da Serra, where he made the first attempt to grow tea in Madeira.

2Chronology

  1. Tea was first grown in Madeira at Jardim da Serra, introduced by consul Henry Veitch.

  2. On 24 December 1807 Admiral Samuel Hood's squadron anchored at Funchal with troops under General Beresford, beginning the second British occupation of Madeira, which lasted until October 1814; Henrique Veitch was appointed British consul during it.
