Lisbon physician and professor at the Lisbon Medical School who attended Princess Maria Amélia in Madeira in 1852–53. He helped found the Princess's hospice and wrote a valued study of Funchal's climate and tuberculosis.

Empress Amélia of Brazil and Princess Maria Amélia, who travelled on medical advice, arrived in Funchal aboard the frigate D. Fernando, accompanied by Dr Barral; the council named a street after the princess.
