Funchal merchant (c.1867–1916) who sought to free local trade from foreign, especially British, houses. He founded the Companhia dos Sanatórios and, as director of the Monte Railway Company, extended the line to Terreiro da Luta, where he built its restaurant and erected the Zarco statue.
