Wealthy landowner and philanthropist in Madeira, owner of the Quinta da Mãe dos Homens and a quinta at Choupana, whose influence in Africa secured Portugal's occupation of Cacongo and Massabi and hence the Cabinda enclave. He hosted festivities for the monarchs in 1901, and he gave 1,000$000 réis towards the Faial quay, which was named after him.
