Prince Albert I of Monaco (1848–1922), oceanographer, repeatedly visited Madeiran waters between 1879 and 1912 and made valuable collections for the study of the hydrobiology of this part of the Atlantic. He also visited the Deserta Grande and described a hunt on the Desertas in 'La carrière d'un navigateur'.
