Coelho Machado (Rafael)
He was born on this island in 1814, and in 1838 he left for Brazil, where he died. He distinguished himself as a composer and musical writer. We only know of his works through the enumeration made by Joaquim de Vasconcelos in his esteemed book Musicos Portugueses. Coelho Machado wrote a Musical Dictionary, which was the first of its kind in the Portuguese language. He wrote: Method of music or Principles of practical music for the use of beginners, 1842; Brief treatise on Harmony, 1851; Original melodies, some of which were translated into Italian; Musical Dictionary. . . Rio de Janeiro, 1842, 275 pages. He left many compositions of sacred music and translated and published various methods for the study of the piano, flute, violin, etc.
