The first clubs in Funchal, exclusively intended for the recreation and entertainment of their members, were the Clube União, which began on March 10, 1836, with its statutes being approved by the general assembly on August 20, 1874, and by the Civil Governor on February 7, 1879, and the Clube Funchalense, established on December 3, 1839, with its statutes being approved by the general assembly on December 18, 1876, and by the Civil Governor on February 16, 1877. Apart from these, other clubs were created in this city in more recent times, among which we mention the following:
