Cidreira (Citrus medica)

A shrub, rarely a tree, measuring 1.50 to 3 meters, with thorny branches, obtuse leaves (in the lemon tree and orange tree they are acute), and large, more or less oblong fruits. These fruits never have the nipple or protuberance found in those from Portugal. The cidreira, originating from Asia, is mainly cultivated in Curral das Freiras, from where a large number of citrons are brought to Funchal every year for confectionery purposes.
