Castro (Afonso de)

Appointed civil governor of this district by decree of May 14, 1870, he took office on the 19th of the same month and year. He was the effective governor of Madeira who held this position for the shortest time: only eight days. His resignation was determined by the revolution of May 1870, in which Saldanha violently seized the government, taking over all the ministries. D. João Frederico da Camara Leme succeeded Afonso de Castro.

Afonso de Castro was appointed civil governor of Funchal for the second time by decree of November 24, 1877, and took office on December 24 of the same year. He left the administration of this district in June 1879.

He was governor in some of our colonies, civil governor in various districts of the mainland and islands, and a member of the nation in several legislatures.

He was born in Lamego in 1824 and died in Leiria in 1885, at the time when he was civil governor there. He wrote and printed some works.
