Castilho (José de)

The illustrious writer D. Antonio da Costa wrote a book entitled José de Castilho, the Hero of the Brig Mondego, which was published in Lisbon in 1874. It deals with the young and distinguished naval officer José de Castilho, son of José Feliciano de Castilho and nephew of the great poet Viscount of Castilho. José de Castilho, due to health reasons, came to Madeira accompanied by his mother and died here, succumbing to pulmonary tuberculosis on December 10, 1864. D. Antonio da Costa dedicates some brilliant pages of his book to the island of Madeira.
