Castelo Branco (José de Freitas Teixeira Spinola de)
He was born in Funchal on January 7, 1801, and was the son of Dr. Mauricio José de Castelo Branco Manuel (See this name) and D. Maria Dionisia de Freitas Abreu Castelo Branco. He pursued a military career and reached the rank of field marshal. He was a lecturer and director of the Polytechnic School and a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences. He published: 'Elements of Higher Algebra', 1843, 'Application of Algebra to Geometry', 1847, and 'Principles of Differential Calculus', 1838. He took part in the campaigns for freedom.
