Carvalho (João da Silva)

Born in Funchal on October 16, 1821, João da Silva Carvalho taught primary education in this city with great proficiency for nearly 60 years, having founded his first school on October 2, 1845, in association with Augusto Correia de Sampaio, who has also passed away. In recognition of his services, the Municipal Council granted him an annual pension of 240,000 réis in the last years of his life. He collaborated in Estudo, Ordem, and other periodicals, was a member of the Municipal Council and the District Commission, and in 1867, with a preface by him, he published Januario Justiniano de Nobrega's work on the visit of the Empress of Brazil to Madeira. He passed away in Funchal on July 9, 1903.
