Carvalhal Esmeraldo (João da Camara)
He was elected senator for Madeira for the legislative session from 1838 to 1840, and was elected deputy for the legislature from 1842 to 1845. He was the nephew of the 1st Count of Carvalhal and the successor and heir of his great house. On June 24, 1822, he married D. Teresa Xavier Botelho, daughter of the governor and captain-general of Madeira, Sebastião Xavier Botelho. They were the parents of the 21st Count of Carvalhal. João Francisco da Camara Carvalhal Esmeraldo de Atouguia Betencourt Sá Machado was an army officer, a nobleman of the Royal Household, and a commander of the Order of St. James. He died in April 1844.
