Carriço (Phragmites communis)

A common grass in the coastal areas, both in Madeira and Porto Santo. Its stems can sometimes reach 2 meters in height. Frutuoso says that the parish of Caniço derives its name from 'the lands being covered with a carriço, like slender canes'.
