They were extinguished on this island by the decree of July 20, 1832, which ended the ordinances or third line 'with all its posts of any denomination'. The capitãis-mores, who had as subordinates the sargentos-mores, left a sad memory of the arbitrariness they committed and the oppressions and vexations to which they subjected the people.
