Câmara Leme (D. Jorge da)

He was born in Funchal on March 13, 1807, and on December 2, 1826, he enlisted as a volunteer in the 1st company of grenadiers of the 4th infantry regiment, but he was discharged shortly after the restoration of absolute government in Portugal. Having emigrated to England because of his liberal ideas, he then moved to Terceira Island, where he enlisted in the 5th hunters battalion, which landed on the beaches of Mindelo on July 8, 1832. He participated in the entire campaign for freedom, until the Convention of Evora-Monte, holding the rank of ensign at that time. He passed away on July 8, 1889, being then a retired lieutenant of the army.
